Solar power has become popular for environmentally conscious and thrifty Queensland customers. Here’s how to get more from this green investment.
Distributors supply energy to your home, while your Queensland energy provider (also known as a retailer) will send you your bill. Queensland energy distributors include:
If you live in south-east Queensland, you may be in the deregulated zone, which means that you have the option to choose between competitive market offers that have been set by a variety of electricity and gas providers in your area. You can shop around for better offers at any time!
These market offers are guided by the Default Market Offer (DMO). The DMO acts as a benchmark price that protects customers from paying excessive prices for their energy. The DMO is also the offer that you’re automatically put on if you’ve moved into a new premise but haven’t yet contacted a retailer to supply your energy.
N.B. Although you’ll still be connected to electricity through a DMO after moving houses despite not having contacted a retailer, DMO prices may not be as competitive as market offers.
Electricity prices in regional QLD, however, are regulated by the Queensland Competition Authority (QCA). The QCA updates these prices once a year to reflect the average prices in south-east Queensland. This ensures that you’re not overcharged for electricity.
Electricity is regulated in this way because it costs a lot more for retailers to service regional areas. The Queensland government works with certain electricity retailers in regional Queensland and subsidises the price difference between:
This enables retailers to service regional areas without overcharging customers.
However, regional Queenslanders may have some options with gas market offers.
In Queensland, you’ll pay a fixed daily supply charge (cents per day) to maintain infrastructure and supply power to your home. In addition, you’ll pay a usage rate based on kilowatts per hour (kWh) for electricity and megajoules (MJ) for natural gas.
Usage rates can be charged at a single standard rate for every ‘block’ of electricity used; this is calculated in quarterly, monthly or daily blocks (i.e. how much you use each day, month or quarter). However, you may be charged a different rate for the first block of energy you use (e.g. first 0 to 1,500 kWh) than for any subsequent blocks of energy you use.
Alternatively, if you have a smart meter, you may be able to take advantage of variable rates (i.e. time-of-use tariffs), which charge you depending on what time of the day you use your energy.
Depending on which tariff you’re on, the cost of electricity in Queensland is measured in:
According to the Queensland Competition Authority (QCA), the typical household in Queensland on residential tariff 11 (single rate tariff) paid between $264 and $430 in the March quarter (January to March) of 2020 on average.1
Keep in mind that this number may vary between individual households, depending on:
If you’re in South-East Queensland, there may be opportunities to save by moving from standing default offers to market offers; the latter of which is a discounted offer with a contract period (e.g. one year). Regardless of which type of offer you’re contracted to, there may be an opportunity to save by comparing other energy plans and discounts, particularly by shopping around for market offers from different electricity companies in QLD (i.e. brands).
According to a report by the QCA, the average residential standing offer for South-East Queenslanders in the June quarter (April to June) of 2020 was $356, while the average residential market offer was $314.1
According to a different report by the QCA, residential customers in regional Queensland paid roughly $313 to $343 on tariff 11; $42 to $51 on tariff 31; and $36 to $42 on tariff 33. Learn more about tariffs in regional Queensland.2
It’s a good idea to compare electricity providers in QLD to search for a great value plan that suits your budget and energy needs.
Where you live in Queensland determines which tariffs are available to you (i.e. your rate paid for energy usage). If you live in regional Queensland, you may have a limited choice of tariffs, as the Queensland Competition Authority regulates this market. If you live in South-East Queensland, you may have more choices when it comes to tariffs, however, keep in mind that the names may vary between QLD electricity providers.
The following are examples of the types of tariffs that may be available in Queensland, and how the tariff names may appear on your energy bill. Tariff availability may be limited depending on where you live in Queensland and which electricity provider you use.
| Tariff 11 ‘Single rate’ tariff Also known as:
|
This is a flat rate tariff where you’ll pay the same price for
each unit of electricity used (i.e. doesn’t measure usage at different
times). This tariff is the most common, especially for regional Queensland customers, as many regional Queenslanders don’t have a smart meter. |
| Tariff 12A ‘Time of use’ (TOU) tariff Also known as:
|
This tariff is calculated on how much energy is used at certain
times. It includes high usage charges during peak times, lower charges at
other times, and a daily supply charge. You will need a smart meter to measure usage for this tariff, but it means you can use your high-powered appliances in off-peak times to possibly save money on energy usage. |
| Tariff 14 ‘Demand’ tariff Also known as:
|
Customers need a smart meter to access this tariff. This tariff
includes a lower daily supply and usage charges. However, it will also
include demand charges for peak periods, usually in summer. Demand charges are based on how much power is used or how fast you use electricity in peak season during a 30-minute period. |
| ‘Lifestyle’ tariff Also known as:
|
This tariff may only be available in SEQ. It charges a flat rate
for usage (cents per kWh) as well as also a fixed amount ($/month) for a
specific allowance of energy during the summer peak period (November to
March). You may also be able to access a summer peak ‘top-up’ at an
additional cost per month. This tariff is only available for regional Queenslanders, whose retailer and distributor are Ergon Energy. This tariff is not available for those whose distributor is Energex (South East Queenslanders) or Essential (those on the New South Wales and Queensland border). |
| Tariff 31 and 33 ‘Economy’ tariff Also known as:
|
With this tariff, appliances like pool pumps and hot water
systems are metered. It’s generally cheaper than Tariff 11 because
electricity may not be available at all times (it has an interruptible
supply). Tariff 31 guarantees supply for 8 hours per day, while Tariff 33
supplies electricity for 18 hours per day. Regional customers must first be on tariff 11, 12 or 14 to access one of these tariffs. |
If you’re living in Queensland, you can take advantage of time-of-use tariffs through a digital smart meter. Prices in SEQ are generally divided between peak (high demand), off-peak (low demand), and shoulder rates (all other times).
If you’re in South-East Queensland, Energex divides residential time-of-use rates into:
If you are living in regional Queensland, Ergon energy only offers time of use pricing throughout summer. During this period, peak times are from 3pm to 9:30pm weekdays. From March to November, Ergon charges all electricity at off-peak rates, no matter which time it’s used.
If you reside close to the QLD/NSW border, Essential Energy classifies residential peak periods on weekdays from 7am-9am and 5pm-8pm, and shoulder periods on weekdays from 9am to 5pm and 8pm to 10pm. All other times are considered off-peak.

There are two types of gas available in Queensland:
Not all homes in Queensland have access to gas by pipeline (reticulated natural gas). If you’re not eligible, you can use LPG. With LPG, you’ll have to order bottles when you run out. Bottles are usually 45kg each, which a licensed gas fitter will deliver to your home.
We don’t currently offer LPG through our comparison service. However, you can compare providers and plans for natural gas through our gas comparison service. It’s easy to compare the prices and rates and, best of all, it’s free!
The best energy provider in QLD for you may be different for someone else. This is because your individual household energy needs and the plans or tariffs available to you may vary depending on your location, type of home, number of people you live with, energy usage and what times you’re at home.

If you have a solar power system installed, any unused energy which you produce can be converted and fed into the electricity grid. For some households, this may be sold for a feed-in tariff – although this option isn’t available to everyone.
If it is, however, it means you could be making savings on your energy bills! You just have to be mindful of installation costs of any panels, the expense to maintain these panels, etc.
New customers can no longer access the Solar Bonus Scheme feed-in tariff (44c solar selling rate), which was a previous Government incentive for Queenslanders to install solar panels.
To make electricity more affordable for Queensland residents, the Queensland Government initiated the Affordable Energy Plan in 2018, which included:

The ‘best’ solar feed in tariff in QLD may vary depending on your energy needs, location, number of people in your household and what hours of the day you’re at home – not to mention what is available to you. Some providers in SEQ, for example, may offer competitive rates and various feed-in tariffs, but others won’t; that’s why it’s important to shop around.
If you live in regional Queensland and are an eligible Ergon Energy Retail or Origin Energy customer, you may be able to access the regional solar feed-in tariff. This flat-rate tariff may change every year, so reach out to your provider for more information.

You will find energy meter costs included in your energy bill. This covers the costs of purchasing and connecting the metering equipment, as well as any inspections, testing, maintenance, repairs, replacements, quarterly or regular meter readings, and handling metering data.
The Australian Energy Regulator (AER) sets the price that providers charge for standard meter readings (older meters). However, modern digital meter charges are not regulated, which means your energy provider can choose how much they charge for digital metering and will add these to your daily supply charges.
